The Quartodecimans were early Christians who maintained the tradition derived from Judaism, and observed Pascha at the same time that the Jews observed Passover. In this work, Alistair Stewart, the leading authority on Melito and the Quartodecimans, presents a unique collection of material in a form ideal for classroom use as well as for the general reader. At the head of this newly revised collection stand the original Greek text and an updated translation. Alongside this is an extensive introduction and annotation pointing out not only the parallels to Jewish practice, but also offering an analysis of the work in terms of classical rhetoric. Further, in this edition the translator has included an expanded selection of Melito’s fragments, testimonia to Melito, and other material vital for understanding the Quartodeciman liturgies from Rome, Syria, and Asia.

With prestigious loans from the National Gallery London, the Prado Museum and the Louvre among others, the exhibition Blood & Tears. Albrecht Bouts and the Image of the Passion brings together for the first time exceptional works from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Albrecht Bouts (1451/55-1549) is the son of Dirk Bouts (ca. 1415-1475), a renowned Early Netherlandish painter with a pan-European reputation. He takes over his father's workshop in 1475 and runs it until his death in 1549. Albrecht specializes in portraits of Christ, the Holy Virgin and Saint John the Baptist for contemplation. This movement, known as Devotio Moderna, encourages the faithful to pray in private in front of devotional images to stimulate empathy. In order to satisfy a growing demand for such images, Albrecht Bout's workshop expands into a large enterprise, producing paintings in great number. While some are based on famous prototypes by Dirk Bouts, Albrecht creates a number of successful new compositions. Exhibition: Musée National d'Histoire et d'Art, Luxembourg City, Luxemburg (07.10.2016-12.02.2017) / Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum, Aachen, Germany (08.03.-11.06.2017).

This book provides an edition and a linguistic analysis of a Passion of the Christ written in old Milanese prose and preserved in a 15th-century manuscript. The study discusses the dating of this text, the geographical context, and its dependence on a Latin model. It also analyzes its relationship with other known prose Passions and identifies their sources. A concluding word glossary highlights the most interesting and obscure words and terms.

In Exegeting the Jews: The Early Reception of the Johannine 'Jews' , Michael G. Azar analyzes the rhetorical function of the Gospel of John’s 'Jews' in the earliest surviving full-length expositions of John in Greek: Origen’s Commentary on John (3rd century), John Chrysostom’s Homilies on John (4th century), and Cyril of Alexandria’s Commentary on John (5th century). While scholarship often has portrayed the reception history ( Wirkungsgeschichte ) of the Gospel’s “Jews” as simply and uniformly anti-Jewish or antisemitic, Azar demonstrates that these three writers primarily read John’s narrative typologically, employing the situation and characters in the Gospel not against contemporary Jews with whom they regularly interacted, but as types of each patristic writer’s own intra-Christian struggle and opponents.
